Central University of Orissa

Central University of Odisha that is CUO, formerly the Central University of Orissa, was established by parliament under the Central Universities Act, 2009 (No. 3C of 2009) by the Government of India, located at Sunabeda Town, Koraput District in the Indian state of Odisha. The territorial jurisdiction of the university is the whole of Odisha state.

The university was established in the year 2009 as the Central University of Orissa, by parliament under the Central Universities Act. It is one of the 20 new Central Universities established by the Government of India during the UGC XI Plan period to address the concerns of "equity & access" and as per the policy of the Government of India to increase access to quality higher education by the people in less educationally developed districts which have a Graduate Enrollment Ratio of less than the national average of 11%.

Prof. (Dr.) Surabhi Banerjee was the first & founding Vice Chancellor of the Institute.

In August 2019 it was renamed as Central University of Odisha through the Central Universities (Amendment) Act, 2019.

The Central University of Odisha was established by the Parliament under the Central Universities Act, 2009 (No. 3C of 2009). It is one of the 15 new Central Universities established by the Government of India during the UGC XI Plan period to address the concerns of "equity & access" and as per the policy of the Government of India to increase the access to quality higher education by people in less educationally developed districts which have a Graduate Enrollment Ratio of less than the national average of about 11%. Koraput District of Odisha comes within the KBK region (Koraput, Bolangir & Kalahandi) which is still considered as an extremely as underdeveloped region of the State of Odisha .These 3 districts of the State are known for the tribal culture, because majority of the people here belong to the ST & SC categories. Since there is no Institute or any other national level educational set up in this region the Central University is proposed to be established here so that it may widen the access to the quality higher education in the country.
