Nagaland University, the 13th Central University and the only Central University in Nagaland was established based on the Act of Parliament of India and received the assent of the President of India on 20th October 1989 as THE NAGALAND UNIVERSITY ACT 1989 (No. 35 of 1989) & came into force as notified in THE GAZETTE OF INDIA EXTRAORDINARY PART-II SECTION-1 in the October 1989 published by the Ministry of Law & Justice (Legislative Department), New Delhi.
The Institute came into being on September 6, 1994 having jurisdiction over the entire state of the Nagaland. Prior to this, Nagaland had been in the catchment area of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), with Kohima designated as one of the campuses of NEHU along with the SASRD-Medziphema. With the establishment of Nagaland University, the 2 erstwhile campuses inherited from the NEHU as well as the colleges affiliated to it fell within the jurisdiction of the Nagaland University. The nascent Institute had to go through many teething problems initially. The Headquarters of the Institute, i.e. Lumami, as per the Act could not immediately accommodate the needful so as to start functioning as the Headquarters. Hence, for nearly a decade and half Nagaland University had been functioning from the Kohima as the interim Headquarters of the Institute. Meanwhile, the establishment of the academic departments was sanctioned by the Government of India in the year 1997. All the new departments had to be situated at the Lumami and started functioning with the Kohima still as the interim Headquarters. Constructional activities started earnestly making it fit for the academic pursuits at the Headquarters in the best possible way. Upon the completion of the new constructions to a reasonable stage, the shifting of the interim arrangement at Kohima to Lumami took place in the mid year of 2010.
At present, the University has 4 campuses, viz.
(i) Headquarters at the Lumami in the Zunheboto district
(ii) Kohima Campus at the Meriema in Kohima district
(iii) Medziphema Campus (School of Agricultural Sciences
& Rural Development) at Medziphema in the Dimapur district and
(iv) a temporary campus at the Dimapur (School of
Engineering and Technology).

From the Vice Chancellor’s Desk
I deem it an honour and privilege to have been appointed as the Vice Chancellor of the Nagaland University by the Hon’ble President of India Srimati Draupadi Murmu ji, who is also the Visitor of the Institute.
At a time when the education system in the India is undergoing a transformation under the dynamic leadership of the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji and under the stewardship of the Hon’ble Education Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan ji, my responsibility has been doubled to reform & restructure the ecosystem in the Nagaland University in this direction. There is no doubt that the task is daunting but not insurmountable.
Being situated in the remotest corner of the country with difficult terrain, Nagaland University has several challenges. It is also one of those few institutes in the country which has 4 campuses including one temporary campus situated at the Dimapur. The headquarters of the institute is located at the Lumami though; the other campuses are at a distance of 150 to 200 Km from its main campus.
I am conscious that besides the logistic difficulties there are some issues that often hinder the academic & administrative functioning of the institute. One of the major inhibitions of the institution is the morale of the teaching & non-teaching staff. The status of the institute impinges on the academic performance of the teaching community & student progression and placement. Nagaland University has to take up this challenge in full throttle without any rancour.
The immediate task of the Faculty members is to restructure the academic course curriculum in sync with the National Education Policy 2020. Although the efforts in this direction are in full swing at the Postgraduate level, the undergraduate course curriculum needs to be adopted in line with UGC guidelines which are in the offing.
The next immediate task is to prepare the university for the NAAC accreditation which has been eluding since 2019. The Covid-19 pandemic has derailed the datelines though; we are lagging behind the schedule for the next round of the accreditation. It is not just accreditation but also a reasonably good grade is very essential for us to have the national standing with prestige & dignity. It is also important to move up in the ladder of the NIRF ranking.
Besides these, the institute shall be focusing on improving the ecosystem for research & innovation. The teachers need to be motivated to engage in cutting-edge areas of research through incentives and assistance. The road-map for the future has been cut out by envisaging setting up incubation centres & central equipment facilities for life sciences & physical sciences. Alongside this, there is a need to reorient the student progression & placement with a renewed vigour. For the purpose, the cooperation & dedication of each and every stakeholder is of immense necessity to realise the objectives.
Given the various limitations notwithstanding, the Institute has the wherewithal, infrastructure as well as academic, to scale new heights & bring accolades for the state & society of Nagaland.
