Uttarakhand Residential University
Uttarakhand Residential University that is URU, also known as Uttarakhand Aawasiya Vishwavidyalaya, is a state university located in Almora, Uttarakhand, India. It was established in year 2016 by the Government of the Uttarakhand through the Uttarakhand Awasiya Vishwavidyalaya Act, 2016 (Act No. 20 of 2016). It is the second residential university in the Uttarakhand following Doon University, and modelled after the Jawaharlal Nehru University. The first Vice-Chancellor (VC) of university was H. S. Dhami, formerly VC of the Kumaun University.
Uttarakhand residential university came into the existence
on 6th September 2016 by the act no.20 of the state of Uttarakhand via Gazette
notification no.230/XXXVI(3)/2016/23(1)/2016 of the legal and parliamentary
affairs department of the state with an aim to create a holistic learning
centre focused on the understanding and responding to societal concerns. The
University is contemplated to become a think tank, innovative driver, catalyst
and a partner providing sustainable and the inclusive technologies and research
support for socioeconomic development in the best interest of the state.
Two important complementary ways in which the university
proposes to work, will be:
- Development of the integrative, impactful degree and
professional certificate programmes that shall focus on the understanding and
responding to contemporary environmental and health issues with the special
reference to the state of Uttarakhand.
- Promoting collaborations with the academia, industries and research organisations in partnership with the other societal groups, community-based organizations, which may look externally to work in the partnership with other societal groups, community-based organisations, non-profit public agencies, policy makers and business groups.
Academics
The mission of Uttarakhand Residential University (URU) is
to create an atmosphere where candidates create and apply knowledge by thinking
and doing, preparing for the leadership in a rapidly changing world. We believe
that an intelligent candidate who is comfortable just in reading books, can
also study practically BUT a candidate who learns better practically, will not
be able to study properly just by reading, so, education should be skill based
rather than the knowledge based so that it will be easy for all candidates to
study faster and understand better.
The purpose of the education, in the present day world, is
empowerment, enabling one to earn one’s livelihood and live a life of the
dignity. We all know that skill-based education, if taken and promoted
seriously, can provide this empowerment to our huge, unemployed labour force
and help India emerge as a key contributor to a global skills based economy. It
will induce a shift from ‘telling what I know’ to ‘showing what I can do’. The
idea is to ‘demonstrate learning’ rather than ‘vocalise knowledge’.
Keeping in mind the facts, the University has decided to
initiate the following courses under the PPP model to become an institution to
nurture the employable human resource embedded with the life skills. Most
important part of these courses shall be “On the job Training” (OJT) as part of
the curriculum that aims to train and orient the candidates about the work and
their future career. OJT is very important not only to teach the candidates
their chosen career but also to show aspirants the reality about working. It
will be a rigorous training plan put in place to ensure that the employee has
the skills needed to be successful, contributing to long-term retention.
University is
offering following courses
- B.Voc (Hospitality Management)

The four job oriented courses are being introduced to attain the following main objectives-
B.Sc (Internet of
things) is a new and innovative study course, which sets the trend for
environments and devices to become more connected and have more information
associated with them. During this course, candidates will learn how buildings,
environments, vehicles, clothing, portable devices and other objects will have
the ability to sense, analyse, communicate, network and produce new
information.
B.Sc (Cloud
Computing), aims to develop candidates both technically and personally and
produce broad based graduates of the high academic and practical standards to
match the needs of both Indian and global IT industry. Here candidates will
learn the techniques in the delivery of computing services-servers, storage,
databases, networking, software, analytics and more-over the internet (“the
cloud”). Candidates shall have the opportunity to master in the basics of 3
broad categories of the cloud services- Iaas (Infrastructure as a service),
Paas (Platform as a services ) and Saas (Software as a service) alongwith
having hands on training (OJT) on their different modules.
B.Sc (Cyber Security),
shall enable the candidates to learn those techniques by which they could learn
the processes and practices to product networks, computers, programs and data
from attack, damage or unauthorised access as in today’s world of the online
services, there is imminent danger of theft of the financial and personal
information and hacking of the websites. Candidates will also learn- how to
identify security issues and protect information as well as track down those
who steal the data. Computer forensics, ethical hacking, social engineering
etc. may also be the parts of this study programme.
B.Sc. (Biofuels)- This study course has been designed to meet the global energy demand which is steadily increasing with the economic growth combined with the population explosion. The fossil fuels are depleting at a faster rate with the economic development. Thus, the continued use of the fossil-based fuels is not sustainable owing to its limited availability and emission of the greenhouse gases and other air contaminants upon combustion. Therefore, development of an alternate renewable and clean energy source has gained serious attention worldwide.
